Protecting your Privacy with a Router

Filed under: Security — Khurram Ali @ 2:17 pm

I am always stressing the need to protect your computers and networks with a Hard Ware Firewall.

A Hardware firewall or a router is a very in-expensive way to secure your internet connection at your home and office.

Some points to consider when using Routers with WIFI connections is that you should try to use the WPA encryption option in your router to connect with it, if you don’t know how to do it, then at least use MAC address filtering to only allow your own computers to connect to your network.

the logic is simple, would you let someone connect their laptop to your office network and copy all your shared files on all your computers, Hell no, is the correct answer, so keeping your WIFI connection open is the same thing, just worst, becase you are actually inviting people into your network to take a peek in your office.

If you do not have a laptop with WIFI access, but your router has the WIFI option, then please turn it off for your own sake.

software firewall that is built into Windows XP is a good option so people should not turn it off. But there is something as UPNP in your Windows XP firewall settings which lets programs open port on your computer without even asking you, so I recommend that you should turn it off too. And better yet turn off the UPNP option from your hardware fireall / router as well.

Every Router is basically a Firewall because it protects your network from the dangers that lurk in every nook and corner on the internet.

Hamachi Review Free VPN

Filed under: Security — Khurram Ali @ 2:00 pm

All my business contacts know me as an accomplished search engine optimizer, but my close friends call me SOAP (Solution of All Problems).

Apart from my internet marketing business, I am also interested in Security and IT so today I would attempt to write a review on “Hamachi for Dummies“.

Hamachi is a software which runs on your machine and it lets you connect two or more networks (LAN) over the internet, making it look like the two or more networks where on the same LAN (Local Area Network).

For people who have more then one offices in the same city or in many countries, now then can connect them over the internet as if it was one network.

You can share files, folders and printers among other things on your VPN (Virtual Private Network) .

When you install Hamachi, it assigns each computer a five dot namespace and people can create or join networks.

Hamachi is very useful for online gamers becase it would let them connect with each other on the internet.

The connectivity between two networks also depends on their available Bandwidth. So for best performance with Hamachi, you need both the networks on very high bandwidth. Or bottle necks can occur and you can have sluggish speeds while using hamachi.

Another point to consider is that hamachi creates a secure tunnel over the internet between the two local area networks by encrypting all your communication in between the two networks. Your information is secure but you need more bandwidth to send all this encrypted info.

Most people using the Remote desktop connection in Windows XP do not realize that it is not secure and they are putting their computers and their private information at risk by doing so. I have good news for them, they can now use it over Hamachi and make Remote Desktop connection secure.

I forgot to mention before that Hamachi is free with limited features, but even the limited features are more then enough for most people.
